TL;DR
I'm based in Canada, and many native English speakers find the non-English sounds in my five-word legal name to be a tongue-twister : )
The Power of Names and Onomastics
Onomastics is a fancy word for studying how names affect people and the world around them. It shows us interesting ways our names can influence how we see ourselves, how we act, and how others see us. Some studies show that having a unique name can make you feel good about yourself, while having a common name often goes with having usual traits (Mehrabian & Piercy, 1993; Jostmann et al., 2009).
Names can also lead to unfair treatment (Bertrand & Mullainathan, 2004), which is why understanding how our names can affect the way society sees us and treats us is so important.
Beyond the Label. Beyond an Identity.
Names are powerful labels given at birth. Each of us receives a label at birth and carries it throughout our lives without questioning it. Personally, I find it fun and liberating to think that I can change my name and explore new identities. Ultimately, I know I’ll die one day, and that day, it will be pointless to try to grab onto anything, including a name or an identity.
By modifying my name, I practice non-attachment, easing the grip of the human viewpoint and promoting a willingness to explore different states of awareness. This exercise in non-attachment helps me see that what I am can't be defined with a label, yet I can use labels to see things from a different angle.
The Significance of Maveric Real
I love the name “Maveric” for its sound and as an encouragement to maintain authenticity.
As for the last name "Real", it's a personal reminder to ask myself, "What is real?" and remember that those things that seem real are just an illusion. On my deathbed, during that last out-breath, everything that seemed so real will vanish. :) I love preparing for that last moment as a daily practice.
A New Beginning
Though my previous name, Raul Miguel San Narciso Holguera, will always be dear to me, I am excited to step into this new chapter as Maveric Real. I stay open to the idea of future name changes, valuing the essence of experimentation.
I look forward to navigating this new reality with you : )
